Introduction to the Studio: Meet Carlee

Today we introduce CARLEE! She is a seamstress in the studio and known as one of the Cordial Church Belles. A graduate of Winthrop University, she has a degree in Illustration.

Why did you choose that degree? Carlee: I’ve been drawing since I was 3. My mother’s best friend, Lana, is a natural science illustrator. She encouraged my mom to sign me up for art lessons. The year before college Lana snuck me into an illustration conference and I loved the community. I switched to Illustration the first day of college.

You have beautiful illustrations. Where can people see and purchase your work? Carlee: Thank you! I have an etsy shop and a blog. I’m also thankful that Ellie and Andy are supportive of my desire to draw. They hang my work in the studio and they use my skills to illustrate for The Cordial Churchman at various times.

A client requests an owl drawing on the outside of his box.

Do you enjoy working as a seamstress for The Cordial Churchman? Yes, I learned how to sew from video taping one of the owners, Ellie, as she made a bow tie. I then watched it in slow motion. Over the years I have been given more responsibilities. I like that I can give all of myself to the work day, and then still have enough energy and time for an art project or commission after work.
